Erhard van der Vries (1980) obtained his PhD with Albert Osterhaus and Charles Boucher from the Erasmus Medical Centre (NL; 2014), on a thesis entitled Influenza Resistance to Antiviral Drugs. He has worked as a co-PI on the Influenza Resistance Information Study (IRIS). This prospective clinical trial (Hoffmann La-Roche) monitored global influenza epidemiology of antiviral resistance after the emergence of the oseltamivir-resistant H1N1 circulating prior to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza virus. Since January 2015 has obtained a job as a project leader at the newly established Research Center for Emerging Infections and Zoonoses (RIZ) at the veterinary University of Hannover, Germany.
