Maria Zambon, BSc, PhD
Maria Zambon is a medically and scientifically (PhD) qualified virologist and is the designated UK National Microbiology Focal point. She is currently Director of Reference Microbiology, Public Health England (previously HPA), responsible for public health laboratory surveillance, outbreak response and integrated clinical research programmes. Maria’s main research interests include vaccine development, viral diagnosis, molecular epidemiology and antivirals for RNA viruses and she has directed longstanding programmes in these areas, and more recently on interventions for treatment of emerging respiratory infections such as SARS and MERS CoV. Maria is a member of the WHO IHR Emergency Committee, and has made significant individual contributions to UK and international pandemic planning for influenza.
