David Swayne, DVM, PhD

Dr. Swayne earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and M.Sc. in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Missouri in 1984, a Ph.D. in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Georgia in 1987, and is a veterinary medical board-certified specialist in Veterinary Pathology (1988) and as a Poultry Veterinarian (1992). Prior to joining ARS, Dr. Swayne was a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University (1987-1994). Since 1994, Dr. Swayne has been the Laboratory Director for the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens, Georgia.

For past the 29 years, his personal research has focused on pathobiology and control of avian influenza in poultry. Dr. Swayne has served on World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) committees to update the Avian Influenza chapters in Terrestrial Animal Health Code and Manual, and completed a 16 month sabbatical to study highly pathogenic avian influenza control programs. He currently serves as Chair of the Executive Committee for OFFLU, the joint OIE/FAO Animal Influenza Network. He has participated in missions or conferences on avian influenza control and biosafety/biosecurity in 51 countries during the past 20 years. He has published over 280 peer-reviewed papers on poultry health issues, primarily on avian influenza.
