Ervin Fodor is Professor of Virology at the University of Oxford. His principal interests lie in understanding the molecular mechanisms of influenza virus replication. He is an expert on the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of influenza virus and the transcription and replication of the influenza virus RNA genome. He was the first to isolate and structurally and functionally characterize the positive-sense replicative intermediate of a negative strand RNA virus and played pivotal role in uncovering the RNA-free structure of the influenza virus RNA polymerase. Previous work involves the characterization of the influenza virus RNA regulatory sequences, identification of cellular factors involved in influenza virus replication, understanding cellular responses to influenza virus infection and the development of a reverse genetics system for influenza A virus.
